DESCRIPTION: The Equality Act (H.R. 5; S. 393) is a key piece of civil rights legislation. The bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system. The bill passed the US House of Representatives in February of this year. The filibuster, however, presents a large hurdle to its passage, as it has done for many pieces of civil rights legislation in the past. Join the ACS At-Large, Austin, Chicago, DC, Georgia, Los Angeles, Madison, Northeast Ohio, Oregon, and San Diego Lawyer Chapters for a chance to hear experts and advocates discuss these current issues. \n\nFeaturing:\nGilbert Gonzales, Ph.D., MHA, Assistant Professor, Center for Medicine, Health, & Society, The Program for Public Policy Studies, the Department of Health Policy, Vanderbilt University Medical Center\nNora Huppert, Renberg Fellow, Lambda Legal\nStephen Spaulding, Senior Counsel, Public Policy & Government Affairs; Senior Advisor to the President, Common Cause\nModerated by:\nSteve Sanders, Professor of Law, Indiana University Maurer School of Law\nReading materials for this event can be found pasted here below:\n\n"The Equality Act Is Needed to Advance Health Equity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Populations" American Journal of Public Health by Gilbert Gonzales & Kyle Gavulic: https://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/10.2105/AJPH.2020.305614\nWashington Post Article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/senate-lgbtq-equality-act/2021/06/19/887a4134-d038-11eb-a7f1-52b8870bef7c_story.html\n\nThe American Constitution Society is a State Bar of California approved CLE provider.
