DESCRIPTION: Over the past five years, solitary confinement has become a focus of public discourse, legislative reform, policy change, prison hunger strikes, papal condemnation, scholarship, religious inspiration, art, and judicial attention. Just last year, Justice Sotomayor likened solitary confinement to a “penal tomb.” \n\nJoin the ACS Chicago Lawyer Chapter, the ACS Chicago-Kent College of Law Student Chapter, and the Chicago Council of Lawyers for a panel that brings together leading national experts on solitary confinement and incarceration, including mental health professionals, correctional administrators, litigants, and legal scholars, to discuss the issue.\n\nFeaturing:\n\nLeann Bertsch, Director, North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation\nDr. Craig Haney, Professor of Psychology, UC Santa Cruz\nJules Lobel, Bessie McKee Walthour Endowed Chair and Professor of Law, University of Pittsburgh School of Law\nJudith Resnik, Arthur Liman Professor of Law, Yale Law School\n\nModerator:\nDr. Meredith Martin Rountree, Senior Lecturer, Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law\n\nThe event will run from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.\n\nIn addition to this panel, there will be a full day symposium on solitary confinement at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law on November 8.
