DESCRIPTION: Join the ACS San Diego Lawyer Chapter for its 2024 Annual Reception featuring ACS President Russ Feingold. During the program, the ACS San Diego Lawyer Chapter will also honor the memory of Candace Carroll and Howard Wayne, and celebrate its Howard Wayne and Roberto Alvarez Awardees.\nThis year, the chapter will present its newly created Howard Wayne Award. Howard Wayne was a founding member of the ACS San Diego Lawyer Chapter and a long-time ACS Leader. Howard mentored countless new lawyers and law students, served as an attorney for nearly fifty years, and served in public interest roles including as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California-Department of Justice, a California State Assemblymember, and the San Diego County Grand Jury, leaving an enduring mark both in the San Diego legal community and in the national ACS network. Howard passed away on November 2, 2023, on his 75th birthday. The chapter is excited to announce its inaugural Howard Wayne Awardees:\n\n Johanna Schiavoni, Appellate Counsel with Complex Appellate Litigation Group LLP\n\n\nHon. Colin Parent, Councilmember, La Mesa City Council, Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel, Circulate San Diego\n\nThe chapter will also award its Roberto Alvarez Award, which recognizes a San Diego lawyer who has made outstanding contributions to progressive legal causes and whose values align with ACS's mission to support and advocate for laws and legal systems that redress the founding failures of our Constitution, strengthen our democratic legitimacy, uphold the rule of law, and realize the promise of equality for all, including people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and other historically excluded communities.&nbsp;Roberto Alvarez was the lead plaintiff in Roberto Alvarez vs. Board of Trustees of the Lemon Grove School District (1931), the nation’s first successful school desegregation case, which reintegrated the grammar school in the Lemon Grove community of San Diego after the segregation of Mexican students. The chapter is excited to celebrate its Roberto Alvarez Awardee:\n\nMattheus E. Stephens, Shareholder, Littler Mendelson P.C.\n\nThe Program will also feature Welcome Remarks from Dean Sean M.
