DESCRIPTION: This panel discussion will explore how rap lyrics are used as evidence in criminal trials against hip-hop artists, and how this racialized practice criminalizes Black artistry and creative expression. Discussion topics will include specific examples of this practice (most recently in the YSL case in Atlanta), the legal issues involved, and the cultural implications for hip-hop and racial justice more generally. The event is inspired by Sidney Madden and Rodney Carmichael's "Louder Than a Riot" podcast, and by Professor Andrea Dennis and Erik Nielsen's book, "Rap on Trial."\n\nConfirmed speakers include Dr. Richard Cooper, Director of the BSW Program and Co-Coordinator of the African American Studies program at Widener University, and Professor Lisa Washington, Assistant Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School. The event will include approximately 45 minutes of discussion and 15 minutes for audience Q&A. We plan to co-sponsor this event with the Temple Law Black Law Students Association.
