Event Details

In many of history's transformational events, legal advocates played a significant role in achieving change. However, lawyers, organizers, and community members often encounter contradictions to social movements when centering traditional models of legal advocacy and litigation. During this training, join the ACS South Florida ACS Lawyer Chapter, the University of Miami ACS Student Chapter, the NLG South Florida Chapter, the University of Miami National Lawyers Guild Student Chapter, Law4Black Lives, and Movement Law Lab as we confront these contradictions. Participants will gain practical knowledge and skills about how to work collaboratively with organizers and activists to build social movements that have the power to win. Specifically, in the workshop, participants will: explore the range of roles legal advocates play & the competing trade-offs of varying approaches; identify the core strategies, tactics, and skills of movement legal work; and share real stories of cases/campaigns, constructively reflect on challenges and opportunities, and discuss power & privilege and the importance of an anti-oppression framework in movement lawyering.

Featuring:

Ameca Reali, Membership Director, Law4Black Lives

Meena Jagannath, Director of Global Programs, Movement Law Lab; Co-Founder, The Community Justice Project
