Please join the ACS San Diego Lawyer Chapter and the San Diego County Bar Association in welcoming Judge John B. Owens for an in-depth dialogue on the Ninth Circuit, the best practices for appearing before the court, judicial philosophy, and a conversation on upholding the U.S. Constitution.

Prior to becoming a federal judge in 2014, he was a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP (where he focused on white collar investigations and appellate matters), and a federal prosecutor for more than 11 years in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and San Diego. He served as the Chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California and received two Director’s Awards for his work there.
Judge Owens graduated first in his class from Stanford Law School in 1996, where he was an Executive Editor on the Stanford Law Review. After graduation, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable J. Clifford Wallace of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and for the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court of the United States. His written work has appeared in the California Law Review, the UCLA Law Review, the Northwestern Law Review, and other law reviews.
Over the years, Judge Owens has served on many court committees, including the Space and Facilities, Jury Instructions, Opportunity and Equality, and Executive Committees. He also served as Chair of the Ninth Circuit Conference from 2020-22, where he helped navigate the Court through COVID. He was recently elected as the Ninth Circuit representative for the Federal Judges Association.
