The discussion will answer questions sparked by the 2016 presidential election, such as, "Why do Americans still accept the Electoral College, this patently anti-democratic feature of our election system?" and "How did other generations go about fixing or mitigating other 'bugs' in the U.S. Constitution?" Professor Wilfred Codrington, Assistant Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School, will discuss these issues and others in the context of his new book, The People's Constitution: 200 Years, 27 Amendments, and the Promise of a More Perfect Union, which he authored with John Kowal, his colleague at the Brennan Center for Justice. This book is a rigorous, yet accessible, narrative history that chronicles the "who, why, and how" previous generations have improved our founding charter—making it more just, more democratic, more inclusive, and more responsive to the needs of a changing country—through the constitutional amendment process set out in Article V.
