How can we translate progressive values into reforms of the international legal order? Currently, there is no clear consensus on what a progressive treaty system should look like. During this event, cosponsored by the South Florida, Houston, and Minneapolis-St. Paul ACS Lawyer Chapters, three international disputes lawyers will debate whether the international investment treaty system is currently accomplishing its mission of increasing foreign direct investment (FDI) and protecting investors.

They will also exchange ideas on how treaties can be drafted and renegotiated to advance progressive values, in areas including the environment, human rights, global health, and corporate social responsibility.

The panelists will also discuss how discourse amongst the international community and U.S. leadership on this issue has changed over time, highlighting the specific approaches articulated by the European Union, President Clinton, Senator Warren, Vice President Biden, President Obama, and President Trump.
