Biography:

Justice Thissen was born and raised in Bloomington, Minnesota. He graduated from Harvard University in 1989 and attended the University of Chicago Law School. After earning his law degree, Justice Thissen returned home to Minnesota and clerked for the Honorable James B. Loken of the Eighth Circuit. He was a shareholder at Briggs and Morgan and, prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, he was Senior Counsel of the Health Law Group at Ballard Spahr. Justice Thissen also served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for 16 years and served as Speaker of the Minnesota House from 2013 to 2015.

Justice Thissen was appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court by Governor Mark Dayton in April 2018. At his swearing-in ceremony, former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Kathleen Blatz praised Justice Thissen for having “never lost sight of the fact that he is deeply connected to the people of this state.” In private practice, Justice Thissen represented a wide range of pro bono clients and he remains a strong advocate for encouraging attorneys to engage in pro bono work.
