Event Details

Join the ACS Oregon Lawyer Chapter for a panel discussion with local advocates working to combat dangerous policies the current administration has implemented to weaponize the U.S. immigration system--from detention through adjudication--against adults and children seeking humanitarian relief.

Professor Warren Binford will share her experiences inspecting facilities the federal government uses to detain migrant children in the custody of federal immigration authorities, highlighting the legal violations by the federal government and the loopholes that must be closed to ensure the humane treatment of children and families.

Jordan Cunnings, Nadia Dahab, and Nathan Morales, counsel for six organizations currently challenging the weaponization of the immigration court system in the District of Oregon case of Las Americas v. Trump, will talk about how the system is broken not only in detention, but through adjudication. Specifically, they will discuss the failure of the immigration courts to provide a fair and impartial forum for the adjudication of immigration cases due to systemic bias, the increasingly sharp political rhetoric surrounding the rights of immigrants, and the fact that immigration judges ultimately must answer to the nation’s top prosecutor: the U.S. Attorney General.

Featuring:

Warren Binford, Professor and Director of Clinical Law Program, Willamette University College of Law
Jordan Cunning, Equity Corps Program Director, Innovation Law Lab
Nadia Dahab, Senior Staff Attorney, Innovation Law Lab
Nathan Morales, Associate, Perkins Coie LLP
