The first woman to argue before the Supreme Court of the United States was Belva Ann Lockwood in 1880 in Kaiser v. Stickney. As of the close of 2016, a total of 726 women have argued before the Supreme Court 1,430 times. Progress yes, equality no. Join the ACS Chicago Lawyer Chapter as we discuss why there are so few women arguing before the Court, the steps we need to take to increase gender equality, and the particular challenges faced by women advocates.
